Playlist: Hold On by The XX

Some bands that become successful very quickly can be rather short-lived in the charts. They either cannot handle their sudden fame, annoy the press and their fans with exaggerated prima donna behaviour – or they don’t care about anything at all. However, the euphoric popularity the British pop trio The XX is currently experiencing all over the world has not gone to their heads, quite the opposite. The members of the hyped group around Romy Madley Croft are more introverted than not when they are off stage – a shyness that can at times keep journalists interviewing them on tenterhooks. In “On Hold” from the current album I see you, on the other hand, they don’t hold back talking and singing.

From the very first lines the track hits you with emotions, starting off with lead singer Romy breathlessly singing “I don’t blame you, we got carried away” into the telephone receiver at a remote diner. A song that describes, relentlessly and honestly, the failure of love, all without resorting to tear-choked voices and other sentimental gimmicks – just as we’ve become accustomed to by The XX. The trio sticks to the essentials – even concerning the most beautiful, unpredictable feeling: love. We love it.
